When we think about barriers to education, we often picture school fees or the distance a child must travel. However, in Morocco, the real cost begins long before a child sits down at their desk.
Breaking Down the Morocco Classroom Cost Index 2025
Every child needs basic supplies to succeed in school. This includes exercise books, pens, a backpack, textbooks, uniforms, and sometimes even bus fare to get to class. On paper, these items seem like small purchases. But for families in rural or low-income areas, these costs can add up to more than many can afford.
Here’s the reality we’ve documented through our work at Ta’leem Trust:
Item | Average Price (MAD) | Price (GBP Aug, 2025) |
School bag | 305 MAD | £25 |
Exercise book (x5) | 92 MAD | £7.50 |
1 Complete Pencil Case | 92 MAD | £7.50 |
iPad A16 | 4260 MAD | £350 |
Total | 4749 MAD | £390 |
Data from our 2025 field research in Casablanca.
The Context: Moroccan Household Income
According to the Anker Living Wage Reference Value, the average monthly income in rural Morocco is 2,250 MAD (£185). This means that equipping one child for the school year can consume over two months of income — and that’s just for one child.
For families with three or more school-aged children, the cost can be overwhelming. Many parents face heartbreaking choices: send one child to school while keeping the others at home, delay purchases until mid-term, or skip essential items altogether.
Why Donations Are Necessary
When we donate to Ta’leem Trust, we’re not merely buying “things.” We’re providing a child with:
The ability to engage in lessons without borrowing supplies from classmates.
The academic confidence to walk into school with the same resources as their peers.
A better chance of keeping up academically and staying in school longer.
Every pound you give directly offsets this cost burden for a family.
What Your Donation Covers
We’ve standardised our School Starter Pack to cover the essentials:

Cost per child: £92 — but thanks to our local supplier relationships, we can provide it for just £35.
