Morocco Classroom Cost Index 2025: Equipping Students Is More Expensive Than You Think...

The Hidden Price of Education in Morocco

When people think about the barriers to education, they often imagine things like school fees or the distance a child has to travel. But in Morocco, the real cost starts before a child even sits down at their desk.

Exercise books. Pens. A backpack. Textbooks. Uniforms. Sometimes even the bus fare to get to class.

On paper, these sound like small purchases. But in practice — especially for families in rural or low-income areas — they add up to more than many can afford.

The Context: Moroccan Household Income

According to the Anker Living Wage Reference Value, the average monthly income in rural Morocco is 2,250 MAD (£185). That means equipping one child for the school year can take up over 2 months of income — and that’s for one child.

For families with 3 or more school-aged children, the cost can be crushing. Many parents are forced into heartbreaking choices: send one child and keep the others at home, delay purchases until mid-term, or skip essentials altogether.

Why Donations Are Necessary

When you donate to Ta’leem Trust, you’re not just buying “things.” You’re giving a child:

  • The ability to engage in lessons without borrowing supplies from classmates.

  • The academic confidence to walk into school with the same resources as everyone else.

  • A better chance at keeping up academically — and staying in school longer.

Every pound you give directly offsets this cost burden for a family.

What Your Donation Covers

We’ve standardised our School Starter Pack to cover the essentials:
